I was able to teach another lesson with a few more students this time that attended.  It really was nothing ground breaking as far as the lesson goes.  I just went through solving equations with 1 variable.  I was able to have the students work together again and I had different students work through the problems on the whiteboard.  I incorporated an example involving allowances for siblings.  Anyway, I thought the lesson went well and the students surveyed seemed to enjoy the lesson.  Here are the results of my survey.

Results with very small sample

I was able to run my survey with a class that I did today.  It started out with about 10 students and ended with 5 so I didn't get a very big sample size.  I really wasn't to impressed with my lesson because a majority of the student's in my class didn't have the sufficient background needed to do the content I was teaching about.  I chose to do a lesson system of equations.  I taught my lesson in the middle of the afternoon which was different because I usually teach at 9:00 am.  This might have caused my small sample size.  I am going to try this survey again on my next lesson but it is something to get me started.

Let's try it!

I currently have a lesson planned in which I am going to try some different things to survey may students on student engagement.  I am going to use a website that will enable my students to participate by using an applet to show the slope and y intercept of a linear equation.  I am also planning on having the students work in pairs to come up with ideas on how to graph linear equations.  I am a little nervous about allowing them to chat together privately but I think it will be a great experiment to see how it goes.

I think one of the things that I am finding out is that as online teachers we have more barriers to get by to get our students engaged, however the online component of a class itself can be engaging because it is out of the ordinary and may allow students to focus without an outside distractions.  However, I think it could do the opposite because of all the distractions one could pick up while working online. :)

I am learning some new things and I am enjoying all of the conversations that people are discussing.
